Clinical survival of premolars restored with indirect versus direct composite cuspal restorations: 10-year results

Limited long-term data is available on the survival and success rate of direct and indirect extensive composite restorations. This long-term study will inform dental clinicians if the use of large direct and indirect composite restorations is justified. The main objective is to compare the mean ten-years clinical performance of direct and indirect resin composite, extensive, cusp replacing restorations. The secondary objectives are to determine the influence of some variables. The study design is a RCT with and extended observation period. The same group of patients as in the study of Fennis et al. will be contacted for one more evaluation of the restorations made during the RCT. In this evaluation the restorations will be scored based on the same criteria used in the initial RCT and using the modified FDI criteria by Hickel will be used. The population consists of 157 patients with 176 eligible teeth. Age ranged between 35.0-81.0 years. Survival of the restorations is the primary outcome and the quality of the restorations is the secondary outcome.

There is no difference in survival between indirect and direct composite restorations after 10 years.
