Primary outcome
The following parameters are compared before and after vaccination: cytokine
production, phenotype of immune cell population, C. albicans phagocytosis and
killing, mRNA expression of signaling pathway molecules.
Secondary outcome
Polymorphisms of genes important for innate immune responses will be analyzed
and correlated with innate immunity function
Background summary
Rationale: The live attenuated Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine protects against
Mycobacterium tuberculosis and leprosy. However, there are also studies showing
protective cross-immunity induced by BCG vaccination against infections with
non-mycobacterial pathogens, among which the fungal pathogen Candida albicans.
We hypothesize that BCG vaccination exerts non-specific immunostimulatory
effect on innate immunity, and that in turn induces cross-protection against C.
albicans.

immunity.

Study burden and risks
There is no direct benefit to the participating subjects but it is expected
that these results will potentially lead to a novel approach to antifungal
vaccination. The risks are negligible, the only risk involving local hematoma
formation at the site of the blood drawing. This will be minimized by the blood
collection by experienced nurses.

Inclusion criteria
healthy human volunteers who are scheduled to have a BCG vaccination, 18 - 55 yr old
Exclusion criteria
Subjects should not come from a Mycobacterium tuberculosis endemic country and are not allowed to use any medication except oral anticonception drugs
