A great amount of medical scientific research is being performed in The Netherlands. By performing this research, diseases can be prevented or treated. Research using human subjects is called clinical research. Human subjects are hereby very important. Without the participation of human subjects, we will not get new medicines or treatments. Both healthy and sick people can volunteer in clinical research. Examples of clinical research are:
- research to find out more about a disease;
- research to find new treatments;
- research to compare treatments.

About this register
On this website you will find the Dutch Trial Register (LTR). This register gives an overview of the clinical research in The Netherlands. This register is managed by the Dutch government and will be updated frequently.
Using this register, you can find information on all the clinical research in The Netherlands. This information is grouped per disease. You can find information on:
- research that is about to start;
- research that has started;
- research that has finished.
The register shows whether or not human subjects are still being recruited. It also shows whether human subjects need to fulfil certain criteria. An example of such a criterium is age. Sometimes a clinical study is only being performed in people under the age of 65. If you want to participate in a clinical study, you can always talk to your doctor about it.
