Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary parameter in this study is negative or threatening interpretation
bias. This will be measured with an questionnaire on interpretation bias on
pain- and health related information.
Secondary outcome
Furthermore information will be gathered on anxiety and depressive complaints
as comorbide complaints, pain-cognition, medical en psychological history,
level of IQ, education level, ethnicity and remaining problem areas.
Background summary
Somatoform disorders are high in prevalence. The consequences of somatoform
disorders amongst adolescents and young adults can be far-reaching, such is
seen in a serious obstruction of normal live, social and emotional problems,
high use of medical care and a high risk of psychiatric problem.
Little is known about the onset or maintenance of somatoform disorders in
adolescents and young adults. Research on the development and maintenance of
anxiety and depressive disorders in children and adolescents and with
hypochondria in adults show that interpretation bias (the tendency to interpret
ambiguous information negative or threatening) can play a part.
In this study we want know if interpretation bias plays a part in de
development of somatoform disorders in adolescents and young adults.
Study objective
This study investigates interpretation bias on pain- and health related
information with adolescents and young adults between the age of 13-30 years
old.
Study design
Present study concerns a naturalistic cross-sectional study with a target group
of adolescents and young adults with somatoform disorders and a control group
of the normal population.
Study burden and risks
No risks are expected for participating adolescents and young adults. The
expected benefits are more information on cognitive processes that might have a
role in the development or manifestation of somatoform disorders.
