Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary outcome measure is return to work.
Secondary outcome
The secondary outcome measures in this study are reduction of fatigue and
stress, and improve the quality of life.
Background summary
Burnout (work-related chronic stress) is a problem that is common in the
workplace, and implies that the employee feels exhausted. It is not only an
attack on health, well-being and functioning of the employee, also for the
employer and for society it is costly as an employee is absent due to
absenteeism costs, lost productivity and medical expenses. The usual treatment
of burnout is the cognitive-behavioral approach (coaching) which induced
factors that have contributed to the onset of the problem. With this treatment
reduction in symptoms and increasing the reintegration of work is the main
goal.
Employment rate will be measured by comparing the percentage of hours per week
that one is at work after 12 weeks, the percentage of hours per week that it is
at work at the start of the study and again after 24 weeks of treatment (from
intake). The study measured the fatigue subscale of emotional exhaustion scale
of the Utrecht Burnout Scale (UBOS). Stress is measured by means of the scale
of the stress 4DKL. Chronic stress is also measured by cortisol measurements in
hair, and using an auditory vigilance test. The quality of life is measured
using the subscales of the SF-36: vitality, emotional role limitation, social
functioning and the need for recovery scale.
Study objective
To reduce stress-related problems and increases reintegration of work, the
company Letec developed a technique that utilizes the light therapy / magnetic
therapy treatment platform Xentix besides coaching. In order to demonstrate the
effectiveness of this method, a "proof of concept" is necessary. This can be
obtained by means of a scientific study in which the research question is
whether the therapy using light / magnetic therapy can contribute return to
employment (return to work), reducing stress and fatigue and improve the
quality of life. The research will provide insight into the effectiveness of
treatment with light therapy / magnetic field therapy. The intention is to
implement the proven efficacy of the treatment within the care of people with
burnout symptoms.
Study design
The study is a randomized placebo-controlled study and will take approximately
one year in burnout patients (n = 90). Subjects with the aforementioned
problems are treated in three groups namely: group 1 receives light therapy /
magneticfield- therapy and coaching, group 2 receives the same treatment with
the lighttherapy / magneticfield- therapy which is not activated and Group 3
will only receive coaching.
Intervention
Participants will be treated for 12 weeks, 2 times a week for 40 minutes on the
treatment platform with light therapy / magnetic therapy / coaching treated
(group 1). A placebo group received the same treatment which the lighttherapy /
magneticfield therapy is not activated (group 2) and a control group receives
only coaching (group 3).
Study burden and risks
The personal burden of participation in the study is very small. Both intake
(interview), questionnaires, vigilance test and cutting off a small portion of
head hair is experienced as not harmful. Side effects are rarely observed, and
treatment with phototherapy and very weak magnetic fields is not found as
unpleasant by almost all users.
