differences with respect to sexual fantasies, and the nature and content of the
collected (objective measure) and preferred (subjective measure) child
pornography material
Secondary outcome
Relation between sexual fantasies and content of the collected child
pornography.
Background summary
Understanding the function of downloading child pornography is a vital
prerequisite for determining the risk for possible future hands-on offenses and
the development of successful treatment programs for child pornography
offenders. Based on previous research and clinical impression, child
pornography offenders could be classified into four subtypes. These subtypes
are hypothesized to differ in their social skills, mental disorders, sexual
fantasies and preference, sexual drive and own sexual abuse. Research on adult
pornography showed a link between the content of the collected material and the
person*s sexual fantasies. Possibly, based on the content of the child
pornography collected, one can classify the child pornography offender in one
of the four subtypes suggested, and thus make predictions for hands-on offenses
and suggest an effective treatment program.
Study objective
The present study will test 1) whether child pornography downloaders can be
classified into four subtypes based on their social skills, mental disorders,
sexual fantasies, sexual drive and own sexual abuse; 2) whether these offender
types differ regarding sexual fantasies and content of the collected child
pornography. A secondary aim of the present study is to test whether there is a
relation between sexual fantasies and content of the collected and preferred
child pornography material.
Study design
The study has a cross-sectional design. Participants will fill in several
questionnaires.
Study burden and risks
Subjects have no immediate benefit by participating in this study other than
the monetary reward (¤10). There are no risks involved in this study. The only
disadvantage is the time it takes to fill in the questionnaires.
