suspect for autism spectrum disorder or a low score on the AQ (below standard
score): not suspect for autism spectrum disorder.
The primary study parameter is autism or not according to the ADOS.
Secondary outcome
none
Background summary
In the region of Eindhoven there's a high prevalence of autism spectrum
disorders. In the outdoor department of GGzEindhoven autism spectrum disorders
are diagnosticated very often. Prompt and accurate diagnostics is important.
Study objective
Aim is to determine the usefulness of the Autism Quotient as a screener for
autism spectrum disorders in 15-18 years old boys. Possibly comorbidity like
conductdisorders lessen the usefulness of the autism qotient as a screener
because some boys possibly score high on the AQ while there isn't a diagnosis
of autism spectrum disorder. This can be measured with the Children's Social
Behavior Questionnaire (CSBQ) and the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation
Schedule).
Study design
In all 15-18 years old boys AQ, VISK and ADOS will be completed until 2 groups
each, a group of 43 AQhighscoorders and a group of 44 AQlowscoorders. For this
purpose 100 adolescent boys will be asked to contribute the study. The AQ and
VISK are part of the Routine Outcome Monitoring at the outdoor department of
GGzEindhoven centrum voor kinder- en jeugdpsychiatrie and those questionnaires
will be given or sent to the adolescent and his parents and they will be asked
to complete those questionnaires. Information about the study is also given in
an informationletter. They're asked for informed consent. An appointment is
made for the ADOS.
Study burden and risks
The expected risk for the adolescent associated with participation is minimal.
It takes some time of the adolescent: 15 minutes to complete the questionnaire
and 1 hour for the ADOS. Most adolescents experience the Autism Diagnostic
Observation Schedule as a non burdening examination. Eventually an unknown
diagnose can become clear.
