Background summary
With the introduction of a new laparoscopic technique for the treatment of high
and intermediate anorectal malformations possibly a residual diverticulum may
occur after the operation. Due to pressure elevation during micturation the
diverticulum could grow in size and cause obstruction of the urethra with
ultimate damage of the kidneys, as has been described in literature.
In the Utrecht series this has sofar not been observed. However, the
implicaitons are such that investigation with ultrasound and miction
urethrogram is warranted.
