Outcome measures
Primary outcome
1. To map the post operative pain treatment policy in patients following the "Joint Care®"program;
2. To map the effectiveness of this treatment;
3. To map the side effects of this treatment.
Secondary outcome
1. To map the patient satisfaction about the post operative pain treatment;
2. To map the "quality of life" before and after the surgery;
3. To map the differences in post operative morfine usage between hip an knee replacement patients.
Background summary
Post operative pain is a serious issue especially in high impact surgery such as total hip or knee replacement. According to literature post operative pain treatment often does not suffice. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of post operative pain treatment in patients following the "Joint Care®"program for total hip or knee replacement in the Medical Centre Alkmaar. Based on this evaluation, adjustments to the post operative pain treatment protocol will be proposed if necesarry.
Study objective
1. Post operative pain treatment in orthopedic surgery in the Medical Center Alkmaar does not suffice;
2. Orthopedic patients undergoing total knee replacement use more morfine post OK than patients undergoing total hip replacement.
Study design
VAS pain measurements and side effects several times a day during the first four days postOK.

Inclusion criteria
Patients following the "Joint Care®"program for a total hip or knee replacement.
Inclusion criteria for the "Joint Care®" program are:
1. primary hip or knee replacement;
2. ASA score 1;
3. below the age of 75;
4. no arthritis;
5. no other joints disorders (that may hinder rehabilitation);
6. no CVA;
7. no visual disorders;
8. no (serious) respiratory disease (astma/COPD);
9. no cardial diseases;
10. basic proficiency in Dutch.
Exclusion criteria
Post operative ICU admission.
