Background summary
Children with intellectual disabilities and psychiatric disorders (e.g. ADHD, autism) often present themselves with a wide range of neuropsychological dysfunctions, such as impaired working memory, response inhibition, sustained attention, response variability, delay aversion and altered reward sensitivity. These dysfunctions may –in addition to the low intellectual abilities- contribute to more prominent behavioral problems and poorer learning progress. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that measuring these neuropsychological functions has added value in routine clinical practice. However, this hypothesis has not been tested. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the additive predictive value of executive functions beyond the predictive effect of IQ on behavioural problems and school achievements in 42 Dutch children 6-12 years old with intellectual disabilities (50
Study objective
The aim of this study is to assess the additive predictive value of neurocognitive abilities beyond the predictive effect of IQ in children (6-12 years old) with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities (50
It is hypothesized that measuring neuropsychological functions next to IQ in children with MBID and psychiatric problems has added value in routine clinical practice.
